Star research student March 2016
April 13th 2016
Farzaneh Mahvash Mohammad, student in co-direction between UQAM and McGill (Pr Thomas Szkopek and Pr Mohamed Siaj) was elected a Student-Research Student in March 2016 by the Quebec Research Fund - Nature and Technologies (FRQNT).
The award-winning publication is Space-Charge Limited Transport in Large-Area Monolayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride which was published in Nano Letters, Vol. 15, 2015.
Abstract
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a material used as a dielectric substrate in nanoelectronic devices. Important findings from this study include the possibility of injecting charge carriers into a h-BN monolayer. The development of h-BN-based devices whose stable charge density would be compensated by dopants or a charging effect would allow the use of h-BN in ultraviolet optoelectronic devices. The study may also serve as a basis for possible work on the integration of h-BN into semiconductor heterostructures aimed at creating high-efficiency optoelectronic devices that utilize far-ultraviolet radiation. The manufacture of such devices will have a strong impact on various fields such as the development of appliances or medical devices.

A star researcher
April 28th 2015
Ph.D. student Jonathan Pratt is one of the winners of the Star Student Research Contest.
Jonathan Pratt, a PhD student in biochemistry, is one of the three winners of the Quebec Student Researchers (Nature and Technology, Society and Culture and Health) competition. The objective of this competition is to recognize the excellence of research conducted by college and university students, postdoctoral fellows and members of a professional order in advanced research training in all disciplines covered by the three Funds of research.
The PhD student received a $1000 prize from the Nature and Technology Fund for his article entitled "Evidence of MTCBP-1 interaction with the cytoplasmic domain of MT1-MMP: Implications in the autophagy cell index of high-grade glioblastoma" published in Molecular Carcinogenesis . "Our discovery demonstrates autophagy, a mechanism of resistance to anticancer treatments of glioblastoma, a brain tumor for which the survival rate is very low," says Jonathan Pratt, who conducted his research at the Molecular Oncology Laboratory Department of Chemistry, under the direction of Professor Borhane Annabi, holder of the Chair in Cancer Prevention and Treatment.
Glioblastoma is an incurable cancer for which chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments are ineffective and whose mechanisms of recidivism are poorly documented. "The lack of understanding of the resistance of tumor cells to conventional treatments hampers the development of new therapeutic approaches," notes the young researcher. We demonstrate the impact of an enzyme, MT1-MMP, on autophagy in glioblastoma cells."
Its publication also highlights a novel role for the MTCBP-1 protein, which inhibits autophagy by binding to the enzyme. "The discovery of the impact of the interaction between the enzyme and the protein on the regulation of autophagy is important since it opens the door to more precise diagnosis and possible treatments targeting the mechanisms regulating survival Cellular and autophagic index, "says the student. The discovery of Jonathan Pratt will support the development of diagnostic tools for optimized therapeutic intervention in patients with glioblastoma.
